Parent Academy

In celebration of our twenty years as a school, WSA is offering two nights where parents, WSA alumni and friends can come to class! We often hear parents say, “I wish I could go to school here!” Now is your chance to experience some of the fantastic learning that your students enjoy. Each class is 100 minutes long. The teacher(s) will contact you if there is any preparation to do ahead of time or specific materials needed. At the end of class, enjoy some social time and refreshments in the Commons!

RSVP is required!
Please RSVP by December 15 to Barrie Hillman at
if you are interested in attending one of the Parent Academy classes on January 4, 2018.

A Snapshot in History with Eric Bright

Experience a day in the life of a WSA history student through a dynamic and engaging lesson on textual and image analysis using European representations of cultural encounters between themselves and the native peoples of the New World. The letters of Christopher Columbus and the engraving "Amerigo Vespucci awakens sleeping America" will provide insights into the imperial mindset of the time as well as the methods of historical and discourse analysis developed in the class. Join us to discuss and collaboratively examine this fascinating moment in history and to learn more about what students experience in history class at WSA

Creative Writing Workshop with Alayna Garvin and Lara Herrington

Do you love writing? Do you want to share your creative work with other people? Join us as we discuss short pieces of fiction and draft our own fiction. We will first consider character motivations and conflict inherent in storytelling. Working within the constraints of prompts and time, we will then draft, develop, and share our creative writing in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

Magic & Mathematics with Ben Owen

The Mathematics of Magic breaks the rules to reveal how certain magic tricks are done--with math! We'll see how concepts like parity, divisibility, and algebraic equations are at the heart of surprising feats of mentalism and card magic. Participants will learn how to perform several illusions that will mystify friends, family and co-workers.

Making with Mr. Tryba

Within this class, you will have the opportunity to be a maker and learn to use some of the tools your student utilizes to create their own designs and inventions. During the first half of the class, you will learn to use Tinkercad to design your own personalized wooden key chain using the laser cutter. While the key chains are getting cut, you will explore electronics and programming with Arduino. No experience is needed for this class. Your imagination is the only limit with Mr. Tryba!

Survival Spanish & Survival French with Kim Uyyek and Jessica Outlaw

Are you planning a trip that involves French and/or Spanish but you don't remember much from your high school language classes? Or do you just want to have an opportunity to practice? Join our class for a lively evening of Tourist Survival Spanish and French - learn how to order coffee like a native (or maybe something a bit stronger).

West Sound Parents Rock! Hosted by Paul Burback

Paul Burback is inviting West Sound parents to come out for a fun night of playing music in an ensemble. All skill levels are encouraged to sign up for this class from beginner to advanced. The whole idea is to try something new and have a great time doing it! Instruments will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own if you wish.
