October, 2019: Coming Up at West Sound Academy

This informational evening is open to any parents and/or 9th-11th grade students who are interested in learning more about the college search, finance and application process.

Barrie Hillman, WSA Head of School, and Catherine Freeman, Associate Head of School and WSA College Counselor, will be sharing guidance and advice on what steps should be taken for the college search, the process for applications, how and when to visit schools, what questions to ask schools, how to navigate the financial aid process and also how to make the decision of where to apply and where to enroll. Students are encouraged to attend because they are the ones who will be leading this process!

Friday, October 11 is Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS) In-Service Day, so there is NO SCHOOL.  
 
This is a day when NWAIS teachers participate in workshops, collaborative planning, and professional development. 
 
 
 
 

College Board - PSAT/NMSQTOctober 16:

 

All students in Grades 8 - 11 will take the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) on Wednesday, October 16.  This is a program co-sponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation. 

It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT. It also gives students in the 11th grade a chance to enter National Merit scholarship programs.  

  • There will be an 11:45 a.m. DISMISSAL on that day.
  • Students in Grades 6 and 7 will have a half-day field trip.
  • Seniors who have pre-registered with Mrs. Freeman have the option to take the SAT on October 16. Seniors who are not taking the SAT have NO SCHOOL and may use it as a study day.

Days for Girls International October 19:

 
 

Days for Girls (DFG) International helps girls around the world stay in school by providing sustainable feminine hygiene solutions and health education. The DFG hygiene kits are produced with the help of thousands of volunteers - including the ones in Poulsbo's own DFG chapter.

The Poulsbo DFG is hosting a community work party for anyone who is interested on Saturday, October 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at West Sound Academy in the Commons. Parents and students are welcome to drop by anytime during the day to learn more and help out.

You don't need to sew in order to help; there are many non-sewing tasks also. If you do sew, however, please bring your sewing machine or serger and join in the fun. Feel free to bring friends! Dress:  Costumes, of course!  (No inappropriate or excessively gory costumes, please)
Cost:  $8 without food, $7 with one can, $6 with two, $5 with three or more.  Food collected will go to WSA Thespian Troupe's Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat food drive.

Note:  Non-WSA students will need to bring a completed WSA Guest Permission Form to school by October 25 in order to be admitted to the event.

2019 Commencement Speaker Shares the Wise Advice He Received from the Graduates

 

The class of 2019 in the staging room before graduation - Mark Gsellman photoWest Sound Academy's Class of 2019 came to the House of Awakened Culture in Suquamish on May 24 for an evening of graduation and celebration - the school's 18th annual commencement. School faculty and staff and many family, friends, and fellow students came to share the evening with the graduates. Head of School Barrie Hillman reminded everyone that the purpose of commencement was to acknowledge the personal achievements of each of the graduates - these seventeen individual journeys coming together for this celebration.

The graduates come marching in - Mark Gsellman photoMargaret Johnson, Chair of West Sound Academy's Board of Trustees, then introduced John Boyd, the commencement speaker. Boyd is superintendent of Quincy School District in Quincy, Washington, and is in his twenty-seventh year as an educator, working in a variety of settings. A few weeks before commencement Boyd came to West Sound to meet with members of the Class of 2019 to get to know them, then asked each of them this question, "What advice do you have for me when giving this speech?”

   Pick-up Ultimate Frisbee
            on Mondays!

Herbert Gundran, a volunteer from Kitsap Ultimate, is hosting three Ultimate Frisbee pick-up games this Octoberl. The games are open to all students and take place on WSA's field from 3:20 to 4:20 p.m. Students should sign up at the front desk. 

Please note: dogs are NOT allowed to participate - only humans!

October, 2015: Coming Up at West Sound Academy

next October 6:

Come to the Technology Access Center Grand Opening and Community Open House on Tuesday, October 6.

The WSA community and the public are invited for a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Poulsbo mayor Becky Erickson, tech demonstrations, and tours of the TAC and the West Sound campus.  Light refreshments will be served.

Place: TAC, Ryan Hall, West Sound Academy

Time:  4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

next October 7:

WSA Seniors and their parents are invited to College Q & A Night on Wednesday, October 7, hosted by Catherine Freeman, College Counselor, and Barrie Hillman, Head of School.

Come and get your questions answered on college applications, financial aid and anything related to this important step in the educational journey.

West Sound Academy parent Steve Bentley will be available  to answer questions specifically about the financial aid process - he has just recently completed it and has some lessons learned for parents new to the process.

Cost:  Regular admission at the door is $5.

Monday, October 19 is Makeup Picture Day.  The photographers will be on campus at 9 a.m. Bring in your picture packages if you purchased the first round of pictures and would like new ones taken. Seniors are required to submit their preliminary drafts for Extended Essays and Senior Projects on Monday, October 19.
