Spring Trips

West Sound Academy students will be having adventures on water and land during WSA's annual Spring Trips planned for June 8-11, 2015.   These excursions are four-day experiential learning opportunities that have been a tradition at our school.

The purpose of the trips is for participants to learn collaboration, leadership, and teamwork, and to experience all three elements of International Baccalaureate 'CAS' - creativity, action, and service.  Students are given the opportunity to stretch themselves in a new direction while having fun in the outdoors.

End-0f-Spring-Semester timeline:

  • May 28:  Graduation - WSA's 14th Annual Commencement Exercises
  • May 29:  In-Service Day for teachers; no school
  • June 1-4:  Final Exams
  • June 5:  Trip Preparation Day for teachers; no school
  • June 8-11:  Trips!

GRADE 6 

Where:  Islandwood, a 255-acre outdoor learning center on Bainbridge Island

Leaders:  Karen Mattick and Allan Batchelder

Activities will include:  Running scientific investigations in Mac's Pond and analyzing findings at the Wet Lab, exploring historic Port Blakely Harbor, creating in the Art Studio, and navigating the Teams Course!

GRADE 7 

Where:  Deception Pass

Leaders:  Barrie Hillman and Lionel Pummell

Activities will include:  Rock climbing at Mt. Erie on Whidbey Island, with guides from Pergrine Expeditions, and camping at Deception Pass State Park

GRADE 8 

Where:  Hood Canal

Leaders:  Julieta Vitullo, Gretchen Nelson-Nordquist, and Gary White

Activities will include:  Sea kayaking through the Canal - the adventure begins at Belfair State Park, with camping stops along the way at Potlatch State Park, Mike's Beach Resort, and Seal Rock Campground, ending at Port Gamble

GRADE 9 

Where:  Olympic National Forest and Park

Leaders:  David Miller and Lisa Gsellman

Activities will include:  Canoeing on Lake Ozette, exploring the Hoh Rain Forest and hiking along the  beaches of Olympic National Park

GRADE 10 

Where:  Deschutes River, Oregon

Leaders:  Kim Uyyek, Jen Silvernale, and Paul Burback

Activities will include:  Rafting with Oregon Whitewater Adventures down the Deschutes River, exploring river ecology, geology and history, and camping along the banks of the river.

GRADE 11

Where:  Deception Pass 

Leaders:  Catherine Freeman and David Sumner-Smith

Activities will include:  Rock climbing at Mt. Erie on Whidbey Island, with guides from Pergrine Expeditions, and camping at Deception Pass State Park

Note:  11th Graders will camp and climb separately from the 7th graders
