Barrie Hillman joined West Sound Academy's faculty in the fall of 2008, and accepted the appointment as Head of School in 2011.
Barrie brings over eighteen years experience as a teacher, parent, and administrator. Prior to taking on the leadership of West Sound Academy she served as the Associate Head of School and member of the teaching faculty, responsible for Middle School English and History. Barrie was also an instructor for West Sound's summer program enrichment classes. In addition to teaching and administrative roles, Ms. Hillman has been very active in extra-curricular activities, organizing opportunities for sports activities and instrumental in maintaining the West Sound Academy Garden. Her experience and responsibilities prior to her joining West Sound have been varied, and include positions in both public and private schools. Barrie holds a Master’s of Education degree from John Carroll University and a Bachelor’s Degree in History from Boston College.
Now in her third year as Head of School, Barrie notes, “It never fails to amaze me how enjoyable it is to work with young people every day and what a privilege it is to be part of these important years of development. When I chat with them at lunch or observe them at work in their classes there is such a sense of calm here at West Sound Academy, and yet the air is filled with engaged energy, creativity and excitement. Every day West Sound kids are discovering new strengths and overcoming challenges. The best part is they are collaborating and encouraging each other to succeed. The students here truly enjoy working together and supporting each other. This is what makes me excited to come to work every day.”
