Media Arts
Digital technology is dramatically transforming our world. The
media arts program is a venture into that realm. Media classes begin
with the exploration of the digital image. Whether created or captured,
the images are enhanced using the computer and related devices.
The dimension of time is explored through movement of the images
using video and animation. Sound is developed and edited into the
projects for a greater depth of expression. All of this culminates
with an investigation of interactivity.

After an exploratory media course, students continue with a yearlong
integrated media arts class and/or a web-design course. Along with
an understanding of the technology, aesthetic choices are emphasized.
With these courses and others offered in the computer lab, students
learn appropriate use of the technology to help them communicate
effectively; collect, analyze, process, and present information;
as well as, master the skills necessary to succeed in college and
later life.
Graphic Design
This class offers upper school students the opportunity to learn
skills that would normally be taught only in a professional art
school. The class begins with an exploration of the evolution of
graphic design in the realm of print including book jackets,
poster art, movie graphics, and other popular media and how
traditional and current tools were used to create them. Students
will learn the designers vocabulary and gain an understanding
of basic design elements (layout, positive and negative space, typography,
photography, illustration, etc.). Later they will develop their
own design and production skills using the same digital tools as
todays graphics professionals. By learning to conceptualize,
refine, and produce exciting, eye-catching, and informative graphics,
students will gain a deeper appreciation for the ways visual communications
affect them and their world. Throughout the year, the class will
design and produce some of the printed materials for the school
and community, such as a new t-shirt, flyers, posters, event programs,
literary journal and the yearbook.
Prerequisite: Exploratory media and upper-school status (or by permission).
