About College Counseling at West Sound Academy

Counseling for post-secondary plans begins in eighth grade at West Sound Academy.  During our winter “Fireside Chat”, parents and 8th grade students meet with the Head of School, Student Originated Studies Coordinator, and College Counselor to discuss the Upper School and preparing for college.  Parents and students are encouraged to meet individually with the College Counselor from the 9th grade on to plan a program of study that meets the student’s strengths, interests, and future plans.

During the junior year, college counseling gains momentum with a Spring College Planning Seminar and the Spring High School Tour where colleges gather and speak to interested students at a central location.  Many students begin visiting college campuses of interest to them during spring of junior year and into the fall of senior year.  Students are encouraged to attend national college fairs in Seattle in the fall and spring.

While we are proud of the post-secondary institutions where are students have matriculated, we are even more proud of the fact that students have received the time and assistance they’ve needed for making informed choices.  First and foremost, students are steered toward self-reflection coupled with solid research on post-secondary opportunities that match them on a range of factors.  No two college search processes are the same and students are encouraged to look beyond the latest “ranking” and “name-brand” to more meaningful measures of college fit.

West Sound Academy hosts college admissions professionals from colleges and universities in the area.  The college counselor belongs to the Washington Council for High School-College Relations and the Pacific Northwest Association for College Admissions Counseling.  A wealth of resources; from college admissions, scholarship and financial aid guidebooks, to college catalogues and test preparation information is housed in the college counseling office and can be checked out by students or parents.  A file cabinet of local, state, and national scholarship opportunities is maintained and updated by the college counselor.

College Admissions Tests

College admissions tests such as the ACT (American College Test) and SAT I (Reasoning Test) and SAT II (Subject Tests) are required by many, but not all, institutions of higher education to help inform their admissions decisions.  Test scores are one factor among a handful of criteria evaluated such as rigor of high school curriculum, grades, extracurricular activities, essay(s), etc. Depending on a range of factors, from selectivity to philosophy, the test scores are given more or less weight.

Schools requiring test scores will almost always accept either the SAT I or the ACT.  Some students take both, while others prefer to take just one of the two.  It is not uncommon for students to re-take a test if they feel their first score is not fully indicative of their capabilities.  Some schools will require the SAT II subject tests (usually 3).  The Subject Tests will have to be scheduled on a day other than when the general test is taken.  It is typical of more selective schools to require the subject tests.  Some schools will accept the ACT in lieu of the SAT II subject tests whereby the ACT fulfills both general and subject test requirements.

The following is a list of the 2005-2006 test dates for college admission tests.  Many students take the test(s) spring of the junior year and fall of the senior year.  Timing can be important especially if one is applying under Early Action or Early Decision whereby the tests should be completed by October of the senior year.  The Subject Tests are best taken as soon after completing the relevant course as possible.  Many students take the tests at Olympic College but occasionally, due to space limitations or by choice; students will take the test(s) at a Seattle location.  Registering on-line is best because it provides immediate confirmation, best choice of test centers, and e-mail reminders.  For the SAT tests go to www.collegeboard.com.  For the ACT test, go to www.actstudent.org.
