Barrie Hillman

Barrie Hillman - B.A. (History), Boston College; M.Ed., John Carroll University. Barrie began teaching in the early 1990’s at St. Mary’s School in Medford, Oregon and The Evergreen School in Seattle, WA. She's been at West Sound Academy since the fall of 2008, serving as a teacher and administrator after spending many years in the corporate and consulting fields. True to the renaissance spirit of independent school, Barrie started at WSA teaching one class but quickly filled needs as they arose becoming Middle School Head and Associate Head of School within three years. Her wide variety of experience in business and education provided a strong foundation of skills to assume the role of Head of School in 2011. As a middle school specialist, Barrie’s pedagogical philosophy is influenced by a commitment to the unique needs of tweens and teens as well as providing curriculum that builds a sense of achievement in all students regardless of abilities. In partnership with the Board of Trustees, Barrie is committed to maintaining a culture of continual school improvement and financial sustainability. She has served on multiple school accreditation teams for the Northwest Association of Independent Schools as well as AdvancEd. Barrie and her husband have lived in Poulsbo for eighteen years and are busy chasing after two kids and a chocolate lab. Winter weekends are reserved for skiing at White Pass and summer days are spent preparing for the upcoming year and digging in the West Sound vegetable garden.
